According to reports released on Wednesday, a devastating fire broke out at dawn in a building housing over 195 migrant laborers in southern Kuwait’s Mangaf neighborhood, killing 42 Indians and wounding over 50 others, including at least five from Kerala.

According to media accounts, 49 individuals were killed in the Al-Mangaf building, 42 of whom were Indians, with the remaining being Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, and Nepali nationals.

“In an unfortunate and tragic fire incident earlier today in a Labour housing facility in the Mangaf area of Kuwait, around 40 Indians are understood to have died and over 50 injured,” the ministry of external affairs said in a statement late Wednesday night. The tragedy was the worst building fire in Kuwait’s history, prompting calls for action against landlords and business owners who “violate the law by housing large numbers of foreign laborers in extremely unsafe conditions to cut costs,” according to the Kuwait Times newspaper.

Among the dead was 48-year-old Vadakkottuvilayil Lukose, a supervisor with the NBTC company, whose managing director is KG Abraham, a Kerala businessman, according to The Indian Express.

Vadakkottuvilayil Lukose was from Adichanalloor panchayat in Kollam and had been in Kuwait for the past 18 years.

Shameer Umarudheen, a citizen of Vayyankara, Kerala, worked as a heavy vehicle driver in Kuwait. According to Onmanorama and his relatives, Shameer Umarudheen may have jumped off the flat in panic. He was Umarudheen and Safeena’s second son. He was married to Surumi.

Shameer and his family used to live in Payyakode, Pooyapally Gram Panchayat. Later, they relocated to Vayyankara. He married two years ago. He called his mom and family in Kuwait four days ago. He returned home nine months ago, according to the article.

Shameer’s family found out about the incident about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a relative.

Kelu Ponmaleri, a Kasaragod native, was also killed in the Kuwait fire. Kelu Ponmaleri, an inhabitant of Kasaragod’s Thrikaripur town, worked as a manufacturing engineer for the NBTC Group. He is survived by his wife KN Mani, a Panchayat employee, and two boys.

The other victim has been named as Ranjith, 34, a Kasaragad resident who had been working in Kuwait for the past decade.


Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh leaves for kuwait.

 

Before going for Kuwait to assess the situation, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh stated that some of the remains were burnt beyond recognition.

“The rest of the situation will be clear the moment we get there,” Kirti Vardhan remarked.

Speaking to ANI at Delhi Airport before departing for Kuwait, the MoS stated, “We had a discussion with the Prime Minister yesterday evening, and that is the latest news we have on this extremely terrible accident… The remainder of the scenario will be obvious once we get there.”

When asked about the plan to repatriate the mortal remains of those who died, he stated, “The situation is that the victims are mostly burn victims, and some of the bodies have been charred beyond recognition.” So a DNA test is being conducted to identify the victims.

On Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the MEA’s staff and other officials to discuss the Kuwait fire incident.

 

Modi expressed his regret over the fire mishap in kuwait fire, saying that his sympathies are with the victims’ families and loved ones.
